Azure Virtual Desktop deployment feasibility study.

Customer: BARMER, the second largest public health insurance company in Germany.

BARMER is one of the leading statutory health insurers in Germany, providing comprehensive healthcare services to around eight million members. Digital transformation is key to delivering high quality healthcare services in a constantly changing environment.

Challenges before the project

BARMER IT faces a number of specific challenges in the context of increasing digitalization. As of January 1, 2027, a large part of the data center services will be put out to tender. The goal is to significantly increase the stability of IT services and reduce the use of BARMER IT resources.

BARMER is looking to outsource a significant portion of its virtual desktop infrastructure, while standardizing and improving its performance, and is exploring the use of cloud-based delivery.

Prior to preparing the tender, a feasibility study was conducted for the most widely used cloud-based virtual desktop solution on the market, Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). The goal was to determine how a legally compliant implementation could be achieved, what impact it would have on BARMER's peripheral systems, and what alternatives were available. In addition, the costs had to be estimated.

Project Initiation

The collaboration with Campana & Schott was initiated to create a solid test implementation that would meet the required security and compliance guidelines. Campana & Schott was selected due to their extensive experience with cloud technologies and in-depth understanding of the requirements of the healthcare sector.

Services provided by Campana & Schott

Campana & Schott designed the solution and conducted requirements analysis workshops. The implementation was carried out by implementing the AVD infrastructure using a modern Infrastructure-as-Code approach in Terraform, which ensured an efficient and reproducible setup of the cloud environment. A detailed cost estimate was prepared to provide transparency on the costs of the AVD infrastructure in regular operation.

Regular status meetings and updates ensured clear and transparent communication. Hands-on workshops introduced BARMER IT to the architecture and administration of Azure Virtual Desktop.

Future plans

The results of the feasibility study will be incorporated into the RFP documents and will provide a valuable basis for vendor selection. BARMER plans to continue working with Campana & Schott on future workplace innovation projects.
