Public sector: A smart country needs smart solutions.

The Smart Country Convention (SCCON) 2024 showcased how modern technologies such as Microsoft Copilot open up new opportunities for public administration. How exactly can these solutions be used to benefit the public sector?

Digitalization offers the public sector in Germany numerous opportunities, and the question is no longer whether, but how to exploit them with secure and modern solutions. The spectrum is as broad as the challenges:

  • Pressure to innovate:
Citizens expect modern, digital services. External factors such as climate change, flight and migration, and digital transformation are putting additional pressure on the public sector.

  • Complexity and speed:
Government institutions must accomplish increasingly complex tasks in less time but cannot scale staffing levels indefinitely and need additional technology to support them.

  • Loss of trust:
Citizens lose trust in government institutions when they are unable to effectively address today's challenges.

  • Cybercrime:
Increasing threats require the continuous evolution of existing security solutions in line with zero-trust principles.

  • Privacy and compliance:
Citizens' data is protected by the high requirements of GDPR; technical and organizational measures must be implemented to use secure and modern applications.

  • Big Data:
If we knew what we know… Sharing all information across agencies and institutions would be a key factor in making more informed decisions.

  • Skills shortage: In the medium term, many skilled workers will retire, and the next generation will not be able to replace them. Strong technology support is needed to fill these gaps.

Modern technologies can give digitization a further boost. Their use is increasingly possible for the public sector, especially in terms of data protection and compliance. Solutions such as AI in general or MS Copilot in particular can be used safely in combination with information security measures - for both the data and the users. They offer the public sector enormous potential to increase efficiency and security.

From the citizen's perspective, digitization should primarily lead to faster and simpler services. Important for the use of AI and security are therefore

Use cases:

Routine tasks such as reports, or citizen requests can be automated while complying with security protocols. This also applies to general administrative tasks such as planning, evaluation or the creation of explanatory texts.

Speed:

The integration of AI solutions also improves collaboration between departments through real-time analysis and structured data storage. Information exchange protocols are summarized in a meaningful way and decisions are made more directly.

Security:

Prior to deployment, you should conduct assessments to determine the current state of your data and information protection mechanisms and take preparatory measures.

Careful planning, the use of the right security services and accompanying change management to bring everyone along on the journey are crucial.

Campana & Schott combines all relevant aspects of technical and organizational implementation with extensive knowledge of the public sector in a holistic transformation approach.
